John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (Grade 2) 3m, 5yo+

ALPHA DES OBEAUX, who had racked up a sequence of second-placed finishes, won a Graded race for the first time and booked his place as a Ladbrokes World Hurdle contender in the process.

Bookmakers cut him to as short as 8-1 for the Grade 1, for which entries were revealed on Thursday, and based on the evidence of his latest performance, he has a live chance.

But for a fall at the last at Aintree last season, Alpha Des Obeaux would have likely placed behind ante-post World Hurdle favourite Thistlecrack, and jockey Bryan Cooper thinks he could be a player.

The rider said post-race: “If you look at his form last year he was upsides Thistlecrack at Aintree when he fell and that horse is now favourite. I think he’s a bit under the radar.”

Alpha Des Obeaux is now a best-priced 10-1 chance while Thistlecrack is 9-4, and Cooper added: “He winged his hurdles on ground today that wasn’t ideal and he found plenty. There were lots of positives.”

Trainer Mouse Morris said: “The better the ground the better the horse, at least that’s what I think. He’s got the right attitude and he stays well.”

How the race unfolded

Second in three Grade 1s in a row, Alpha Des Obeaux was sent off the 13-8 favourite, and was prominent throughout along with Martello Tower and At Fishers Cross.

Martello Tower had travelled well, but a mistake four out when clouting the flight did him no favours.

At Fishers Cross, having his first start for 315 days was kept to the inner by Barry Geraghty, and despite appearing to tire rounding the final bend, kept going to take second, 11 lengths behind the winner.
