Plusvital Sir Henry Cecil Stakes (Listed) 1m, 3yo

LUMIERE, well beaten as 13-2 second-favourite when last seen in the 1,000 Guineas, came back to form in emphatic fashion when running out a six-length winner of the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket.

The Mark Johnston-trained filly had won the Cheveley Park Stakes last year and after the Guineas doubts had been raised about her staying a mile. However, she put those to bed by strecthing away from the Godolphin pair of Cymric and Manaboo in the final furlong.

Lumiere had also settled well and had not led all the way, having been prominent in the main group early on, with Cymric racing on the far rail.

Johnston relieved

Trainer Mark Johnston said: “It’s as much a relief as anything. It’s great to see the horse back on track and we can go back to making plans that we’d torn up. This wasn’t a plan it was just something I thought up when I was looking through the entries.”

He added: “In the last couple of weeks she’d just shown signs, not particularly on the gallops, but in her box [that she’d come back to herself].”

Though Lumiere has clearly proved herself over a mile, speed was still the main stamp on her performance and Johnston would not rush into committing her to the trip from now on.

He added: “Joe said he wouldn’t be frightened of going back to 7f. He was sitting there, she was settled and felt all the way that if he moved he was gone. A faster pace wouldn’t be an issue.”
