MOUNTAINOUS produced a heroic display of jumping and galloping to win the Welsh National for a second time and give rookie trainer Kerry Lee the biggest win of her career to date.

“That’s amazing,” said an excitable Lee, whose father Richard saddled Mountainous for his first win in the race – when it was run in its customary post-Christmas slot in 2013.

The race was pushed back this year due to the course being unraceable on December 27 and the conditions were highly attritional with just six of the 20 finishing, but when all around the 9-1 second favourite had cried enough Mountainous was still there galloping for a mud-splattered Jamie Moore.

Two bold jumps at the last two fences sealed it and the pair finished two and three-quarter lengths clear of Firebird Flyer, who was ridden by Paul Moloney – Mountainous’s partner for his first Welsh National success.

40-1 for Grand National

“He toughed it out very well, Kerry had him in good form and she’s doing a good job,” said Moore. Mountainous gave Lee her 13th winner of the season, from just 68 runners. She is only six winners shy of the total her father registered in his final season.

“So much work has gone into him at home,” added Lee. “He hasn’t had a lot of racing and has been nurtured at home. I’ve known he was so well for some weeks now, so we were really fed up when the race was abandoned over Christmas.

“We managed to keep him fresh and sweet and he really enjoyed this ground. When it chucked it down before the race I was delighted. The Grand National has to be the plan now. “

Paddy Power and William Hill reacted by going 40-1 for the Grand National, while Paddy Power went 16-1 about Mountainous giving the Lee family a fourth Welsh National since 2011 in next season’s edition.

Beaten horses

Evan Williams said of the runner-up Firebird Flyer: “He has run an absolute blinder but once again bumped into one. Fair play to Kerry Lee as it is some training performance to win a Welsh National twice.”

Emma Lavelle’s Shotgun Paddy was third at 12-1 and she said: “I could not be more pleased as he had to give weight away to the winner and runner-up in these conditions.

“He will need a week or two to get over this race but I suppose we will be thinking in terms of the Eider Chase at Newcastle for him next.”

The Venetia Williams-trained Saroque was fourth at 33-1, with Woodford County and Portrait King the only other finishers.
