WORLD HURDLE favourite Thistlecrack would be odds-on if he was trained by Willie Mullins, trainer Gordon Elliott said on Tuesday as he revealed star novice No More Heroes would head straight to the festival.

The Colin Tizzard-trained favourite is a general 6-4 shot for the World Hurdle and Elliott, who could field Grade 1 winner and 20-1 chance Prince Of Scars in the race, believes that is a generous price.

Elliott wrote in his latest BoyleSports blog: “Thistlecrack continues to impress me and he’s going from strength to strength.

“He deserves to be as short as he is.  He’ll be many people’s banker on day three so I’d say take advantage of that 6-4 while you can. If Willie Mullins trained him I think he’d be odds-on.”

I would love to train him’

Thistlecrack, a best-priced 13-8 with Paddy Power and as short as even-money, was not the only British-trained horse to impress Elliott over the weekend.

The trainer added: “I thought Barters Hill was very tough when winning at Doncaster. Many people were saying he was unimpressive but what else did they want him to do?

“He’s going to take a lot of beating in the Albert Bartlett. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be the strongest renewal of the race. He’s a horse that I would love to train.”

Elliott ran his rising star No More Heroes in the Albert Bartlett last year when third and revealed the 11-4 RSA Chase favourite will sidestep the Flogas Novice Chase, where he may have met the likes of Black Hercules, Rule The World, Monksland, Roi Des Francs, Pont Alexandre and Outlander, and head straight to Cheltenham.

Elliott also has high hopes for Tombstone, who will run on Saturday at Leopardstown in a race where Mullins is responsible for more than half of the nine entries.

Writing in his BoyleSports blog, Elliott said: “He’s in great form ahead of his run in the Grade 1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle. We’re really excited about running him; it’s going to be a great race. We’ve had a very clear preparation with him.

“There will more than likely be five or six runners in the race. Willie will probably have two, we’ll have one and there’ll be a few others. I really think the trip will suit and the ground will suit him so with a bit of luck, he’ll do it.”
