WILLIE MULLINS, who has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to live Cheltenham Festival contenders, has confirmed that Bellshill will be targeted at the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle, for which he is the 7-2 market leader.

With seven weeks to go until the festival, Mullins is starting to flesh out running plans for the vast array of talent he has at his disposal in the novice-hurdle division.

The Irish champion trainer is responsible for four of the first six in the Neptune betting, although the favourite is the only definite runner at this stage.

“The race is definitely the plan for Bellshill,” he told the Racing Post as part of a Pricewise ante-post preview of the race in Wednesday’s edition. Bellshill is a general 16-1 for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, while his price ranges from 8-1 to 25-1 for the Albert Bartlett.

Mullins, who is also responsible for 9-1 shot Yorkhill, 16-1 hopes A Toi Phil and Long Dog, as well as Petit Mouchoir and Bachasson at 20-1 and 33-1, added: “Yorkhill, Long Dog, A Toi Phil, Petit Mouchoir and Bachasson are all in the mix at this stage. A lot will depend on how they all are closer to the time.”

Disko highly unlikely for Cheltenham

There was bad news for backers of Disko, who has shortened into 14-1 with several firms on Tuesday, as Noel Meade revealed the 20-1 shot was an unlikely runner at this stage after a small setback.

“It’s highly unlikely that Disko will run,” said Meade. “He had to miss a recent engagement due to a little hold-up and, while he has worked well since, he was lame behind afterwards.

“It looks as if he is going to miss out on Cheltenham and we’re probably looking at Punchestown for him now.”

Prince De Beauchene retired

He was not the only festival fancy ruled out on Tuesday as Mullins revealed that St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase second favourite Prince De Beauchene has been retired.

Prince De Beauchene, who numbered the Grade 2 Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse in 2012 among his seven victories over fences, bows out at the age of 13. He was 9-2 for the amateur riders’ Gold Cup.

The Foxhunter market, which also lost Long Run on Sunday night, is headed by On The Fringe at 7-2, with Victoria Pendleton’s likely mount Pacha Du Polder around the 20-1 mark.

Mullins said: “We were looking forward to running Prince De Beauchene in some of the top hunter chases this year but it wasn’t to be and he has been retired.”
