Craig Ervine could not prevent Zimbabwe from failing to reach the follow-on target but Kane Williamson chose not to enforce it, opting instead for New Zealand to add to their 220-run lead. Zimbabwe’s last four wickets fell for 43 runs on the fourth morning, as Ervine tried to marshall the tail to hold out a little longer against a New Zealand attack that, even after 143.4 overs in the field, remained a constant threat.

This was the first day in the two-and-a-half weeks New Zealand have been in Zimbabwe that they were not greeted by clear skies. A cloud cover blocked the sun but with a chilly breeze blowing, there was a little hope of swing through the air.

Trent Boult and Tim Southee started with militaristic discipline, zoning in on the area outside off and mixing up their lengths. Ervine and Graeme Cremer were in survival mode and saw off 5.2 overs before the first runs were scored – an outside edge through gully to take Ervine off his overnight score of 115. He followed it with a sublime cover drive to show the class of yesterday remained.

New Zealand’s first chance came in the next over, when Cremer drove off Boult and got a thick outside edge but Ross Taylor at first slip could not pull off the dive in time. Boult only had to wait three more balls to get a wicket. Cremer attempted a flick to a ball that swung in late, and was trapped in front.

Donald Tiripano showed the same temperament that took him to 49 in the first Test and dealt particularly well with Mitchell Santner. Runs dried up but both Tiripano and Ervine were ready to play the patience game. But on the stroke of drinks, Neil Wagner hit Tiripano on the pads and Paul Reiffel gave it out but replays showed the ball had pitched outside leg stump.
