Graeme Cremer’s captaincy got off to the best possible start as the coin fell in his favour in his first Test as leader. On what is expected to be a flat, slow and low surface, Cremer chose to bat, a decision which will put his new opening pair in the firing line upfront.

With Vusi Sibanda dropped and Tino Mawoyo injured, Zimbabwe opted to hand Chamu Chibhabha a debut and selected Brian Chari, who has played just two Tests, to partner him. They have some experience in the middle with Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza. Another debutant, Prince Masvaure, lengthens the line-up at No. 7. In the absence of Tinashe Panyangara and Tendai Charata, Zimbabwe chose Donald Tiripano and Michael Chinouya as their two seamers, with Chinouya the third new cap in this match.

New Zealand’s line-up was much more familiar with a strong top five, but they too will have a brand new Test leader in Kane Williamson – he takes over from the retired Brendon McCullum. They opted for two specialist spinners in Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, and three quicks: Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Trent Boult.

There was one more debutant in the game: umpire Michael Gough, who is officiating in his first Test.

Zimbabwe:1 Chamu Chibhabha, 2 Brian Chari, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Craig Ervine, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Sikandar Raza, 7 Prince Masvaure, 8 Regis Chakabva (wk), 9 Graeme Cremer (capt), 10 Donald Tiripano, 11 Michael Chinouya

New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Mitchell Santner, 7 BJ Watling (wk), 8 Ish Sodhi, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Trent Boult
