Young stopped by police for driving without license plates

Nick Young is used to going one-on-three in traffic.

But the Lakers guard was baffled when it took three police cars to stop and ticket him for not having a license plate on his rental car. He posted video of the traffic stop to Twitter Monday night.

With multiple officers milling around the car, Young expressed his discontent with being pulled over, saying “this is all for not having a license plate,” while laughing at the fact that a minimal offense was attracting so much attention.

He chuckled aloud at the irony towards the end of the video, and then zoomed in on one of the officers, who was visibly unamused by Young’s lackadaisical approach to the incident.

Front and rear license plates are required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which states that “vehicles registered in California must display valid license plates as evidence of current registration.” There is no exception for rental cars, although it’s not uncommon to see cars in L.A. without license plates, according to the Los Angeles Times, because new-car buyers are given temporary registration and have 90 days to install permanent license plates.

So it appears Young was legally in the wrong, though his justifiable complaints were with the unnecessary number of cops sent to the scene and with the rental car company.

He later tweeted asking his followers whether or not the rental company should pay his fine, and he wondered if the police should have issued a ticket at all when they noticed it was a rental car.

Young didn’t disclose the amount of the ticket.
