MASSAAT will have his sights lowered for his next start with the Sky Bet York Stakes or Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock set to be his next outing after two Classic runs this season.

The star of first-season trainer Owen Burrow’s yard, Massaat ended his juvenile season with a second in the Dewhurst Stakes for Barry Hills and returned to action with a bold second to Galileo Gold in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Despite stamina concerns, connections elected to go for the Derby with Massaat but he ultimately failed to shine with a ninth-placed finish behind Harzand. His next race, though, is likely to be less challenging.

Fresh and ready

Speaking in Trainer File in the Racing & Football Outlook, Burrows said: “He finished a good second to Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst and then filled the same spot in the 2,000 Guineas, which didn’t surprise me at all as I knew he’d done well over the winter.

“We then decided to run him in the Derby as we all thought it was worth seeing if he got the trip, but unfortunately it told us nothing as he went out like a light well before stamina came into play. We’ve freshened him up since Epsom and are lowering our sights a little next time.”

He added: “The York Stakes over 1m2f next week is his most likely target. If we feel he needs a little longer then the Rose of Lancaster on August 6 would come into the reckoning.”
