Yankees' Starlin Castro will also get spring work at 3rd

TAMPA – Starlin Castro, onetime shortstop, says he’s still learning how to play second base, where he’ll start for the Yankees this year. At the same time, Castro says he’s OK trying a little third base, too, to see if he can serve as Chase Headley’s backup.

Since the Yankees are trying to squeeze as much versatility out of their roster as possible, Castro could end up backing up at short and third, all while trying to master a position where he’s only played 72 pro games.

“I never played there,” Castro said of third Friday morning before the Yanks’ second full-squad workout of the spring. But, he added, that’s what spring camp is for.

“Start practicing and see how I feel,” Castro added. Does he know what he’ll have to do to play third? “I don’t,” he said. “I’ll just listen to all the things the coaches tell me about playing that position.

“I’ll try to learn it quick. If they give me the opportunity to play there, just play good.”

Castro guessed he’ll start taking grounders at third next week. In Thursday’s workout, he took infield at second to work with new double-play partner Didi Gregorius.

“It’s not difficult” getting used to a new keystone partner, Castro said. “Everybody knows how good he is. He’s not going to make bad throws. We’re learning stuff, especially (Thursday), the first day we made double plays.”
