Yankees Insider: Rob Refsnyder to try third base

[ad_1]

TAMPA — Rob Refsnyder’s path to the majors was blocked when the Yankees traded for second baseman Starlin Castro this winter, so the 24-year-old is doing whatever he can to give the team a reason to carry him on the Opening Day roster.

That means learning a new position — third base — with the hopes of capturing the utility infield spot when camp breaks in early April. “Three days in, it’s been good,” Refsnyder said after taking grounders on a back field with infield coach Joe Espada. “I feel pretty comfortable there. I’m excited to see how it goes in games.”

Joe Girardi plans to let Refsnyder tell him when he’s comfortable enough at the hot corner to give it a go in exhibition games, though Espada figures to have some say in that conversation, as well. Refsnyder, an outfielder-turned-second baseman, said the nuances of third base will be the most difficult to grasp as he learns the position, but after adapting to second base earlier in his pro career, he seems up for the challenge.

“Most of my errors last spring training and most of my errors professionally have been about knowing the speed of the game; knowing how much time you have — or don’t have — when you get the ball,” Refsnyder said. “Those things come with time, with playing the position. You get this internal clock where you know if you can take an extra step, take a little more time because you know the baserunner. Those are things I want to get the timing in games, so the earlier I can get in a game, the more game reps I can get.”

SEVERINO STARTS

Luis Severino will start Wednesday’s Grapefruit League opener at Steinbrenner Field against the Tigers, while Ivan Nova will get the ball Thursday at home against the Phillies. Bryan Mitchell will start Friday in Lakeland against the Tigers, but Girardi did not announce when any of his other starters would make their spring debuts.

WRIST WATCH

Brett Gardner continued to do hitting drills in the cage as he works his way back from a bruised left wrist. Gardner said he will take full batting practice in the cage for the first time on Tuesday.
