Yankees Insider: Refsnyder flashes leather in debut at third

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Yankees and Rob Refsnyder were hoping he would see some legitimate action in his first spring-training appearance at third base, and everyone got what they wanted.

Refsnyder’s first defensive chance was a hot shot to his left off Carlos Ruiz’s bat, and he slid and snared the ball to start a double play to help Masahiro Tanaka out of a jam in the second inning of the Yankees’ 6-5 loss to the Phillies on Sunday.

“How you drew it up, it was a hard one, but that was good,” said Refsnyder, who played five innings at third in his bid to make the team as a utility player. “It’s nice, you have time (at third base). My goal (on the double play) was just to give (second baseman Starlin) Castro a good feed and let him do the rest.”

As Joe Girardi put it, the shift from second base – Refsnyder’s regular position – to third is “the opposite of what it was before” adding “you have less time to catch (the ball), but more time to throw it.”

Refsnyder has been working throughout camp with infield coach Joe Espada on the potential switch, splitting time between the two positions.

“It felt good, felt natural,” Refsnyder said. “I’m trying to get reps in anywhere. Wherever Joe needs me, I’m going to do.”

Refsnyder, who started the Yanks’ playoff loss to Houston last October at second base before Castro was acquired from the Cubs in the offseason, handled his other defensive chance cleanly. He also singled, walked and stole two bases in two plate appearances.

“Good job. He had two really difficult plays and made them, so that’s encouraging,” Girardi said. “I’m gonna give him some more reps there, because we have to find out. But I want to make sure he plays second, too.”

CATCHING ON

Gary Sanchez, competing with Austin Romine for the backup catching job, got the start in Tanaka’s first outing of the spring.

“I guess you could call that significance, but I think it’s shown how much that he’s grown in the last couple of years that he’s getting starts now,” Girardi said.

The Yankees must decide if Sanchez is better served starting the year at Triple-A or as Brian McCann’s understudy.

Sanchez, 23, left Sunday’s game after getting hit in the upper leg by Phils righty Greg Burke in the sixth inning, but said he was OK.

“I’m just focused on my job, I have to keep working hard every day and call a good game, and whatever decision is up to them,” Sanchez said through team translator Marlon Abreu. “But it’s exciting to be in the mix.”

ARMS RACE

Aroldis Chapman tossed one simulated inning back in Tampa, but there still is no plan for him to appear in a game because of his 30-game suspension to start the season. “We’re trying to keep him going, but slow him down,” Girardi said…Michael Pineda will start and Luis Severino, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller will pitch after him Monday against the Astros.
