TAMPA — Fans have voiced their positive opinions of Alex Rodriguez virtually every time he’s stepped on the field for batting practice. Saturday, Joe Girardi gave his stamp of approval for A-Rod’s early-spring work.

“He looks like he did last year, to me,” Girardi said. “He looks like he’s ready to go. He’s healthy, he looks strong.”

Last spring, A-Rod was working in the field as well as in the cage, taking reps at third base and the occasional turn at first base as he worked his way back after 18 months away from the game. The Yankees turned him into a full-time DH by the end of May, leaving the veteran to focus exclusively on hitting.

“I think he’s probably a little bit further along at this point than he was last year, but I think he has a better understanding of what it takes to be a DH and what he needs to do,” Girardi said. “We were trying running him out to the field and there were things we were doing last year, I think he got sore at times, just like any normal infielder would, that he doesn’t have to deal with this year.”

BACKUP PLAN

The backup catching job is one of the few position battles this spring, and while top prospect Gary Sanchez is the perceived frontrunner, veteran Carlos Corporan and long-time Yankees minor-leaguer Austin Romine are trying to push him for the spot.

“Obviously (Sanchez and Romine) are the two lead candidates going in,” Girardi said. “They’re both on our 40-man roster, they’ve been up here, they know our pitching staff. But I don’t ever come into camp and say, ‘This person has no chance’ because A, I don’t think that’s fair to the player and B, then I think you’re narrow-minded. I think you have to keep your eyes open.”

PEN PALS

The Yankees have three open spots in their bullpen to fill this spring, and while the back end trio of Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller give the Bombers one of the best groups in the league, the loss of Adam Warren will be noticeable if they can’t find a suitable replacement for the swingman.

“I think there are a number of guys who could do it,” Girardi said. “A number of the young starters could do it. And the thing about Adam is, Adam had to learn that role and Adam was one of those guys that he had the normal progression in spring training where he got more comfortable each year and could really blossom and be the guy we knew he was capable of being.”

Bryan Mitchell, who made two starts and 18 relief appearances for the Yankees last season, could be in the mix to take over Warren’s role.

BRUISE CONTROL

The MRI on Domingo German’s right elbow Friday revealed no ligament tears, but rather a strain in his flexor muscle and an edema in his elbow, which Girardi described as “a bone bruise, basically.”

German, who had Tommy John surgery last year, will be sent for a contrast-dye MRI on Monday to gather more information on his injuries.

STARTING POINT

Girardi plans to announce the team’s starter for the first few exhibition games on Sunday. The Yankees open Wednesday at Steinbrenner Field against the Tigers, followed Thursday by a home game against the Phillies.
