In 2015, Yankee Carlos Beltran greets his former manager, Terry Collins.

Carlos Beltran plays across town these days, but he watched intently last season while his former New York club — the Mets — played in the World Series, delighted that Terry Collins had finally reached the Fall Classic.

“It was great. I was especially happy for Terry Collins because he is a great man,” the Yankees’ right fielder said Wednesday. “I had him as a manager. He is a great manager.”

When Collins first got the job before the 2011 season, though, Beltran was leery. The new Met manager had a reputation of sorts. “We heard a lot of bad things about Terry Collins, about his previous experience when he managed the Astros and Anaheim,” Beltran said.

Collins, as the manager himself has said many times, changed before taking the Met job. Collins and Beltran were together for 98 games in 2011 before Beltran was traded to San Francisco for Zack Wheeler.

“And when I first got him as a manager, it was the best manager I ever had in my career as a ballplayer,” said Beltran, who appeared at Topps’ Manhattan office to help launch the first series of this year’s set of baseball cards.

“He communicates, very intense, and that’s what you look for in a manager. I’m just very happy to see him coming through and being able to experience the opportunity to be in the World Series.

“At the same time, happy for the other guys like [Daniel] Murphy, who basically put an unbelievable run. And you know, David Wright, guys that I played with. Lucas Duda. Jonathon Niese. It was good to see those guys experiencing that moment.”

Beltran, who played for the Mets from 2005 until the Wheeler deal, felt for Collins after the manager’s Game 5 decision to stick with Matt Harvey to start the ninth inning after Harvey lobbied to finish. It backfired and the Royals ended up closing out the Mets that night.

“That’s tough,” Beltran said. “I personally felt, in his mind, he wanted to take him out, but Harvey was pitching such a good game and showing that he wanted that moment, so he went with what Harvey showed him.

“Later on, I don’t think it would happen. He’d say, ‘My friend, I’m going to give you a kiss if I have to, but I’m going to my closer right here.’

“He just wanted to give the player the trust. And Harvey was pitching great. I don’t think it was a bad decision to leave him in, but in his heart, I felt that he wanted to make a different move.

“That’s the beauty of being a manager. Sometimes you just have to go with what you feel.”
