Wright on Shannon Forde: 'She always left you with a smile'

PORT ST. LUCIE – David Wright smiled sadly. The Mets captain remembered seeing Shannon Forde working the clubhouse minutes after they had just lost the World Series. Thin and gaunt from her nearly four-year battle with breast cancer, Forde was walking around the room talking quietly to players, offering them a kind word, a hug or a smile.

“It was hard to see her like that, but she always left you feeling better,” Wright said. “She always left you with a smile.”

The clubhouse at Tradition Field was unusually quiet Saturday morning. Friday night the players had been called by the media staff, clubhouse attendants or teammates to spread the news that Forde, 44, had passed away peacefully in her native New Jersey surrounded by family. The team issued a statement Friday night, but Saturday the news was still sinking in around the clubhouse.

“It was a shock,” Lucas Duda said. “I mean you knew it was not good, but I guess I just wasn’t really expecting it. It’s sad. Whenever she came in the clubhouse, she was smiling, laughing, talking to everyone.

“She was more than just someone who worked for the team to us,” Duda added, “she was like a team mom.”

Arrangements had not been made as of Saturday afternoon, but players and coaches were privately discussing ways to honor her. Several coaches and team personnel based in Florida for spring training hoped there would be something at Tradition Field for the players to remember her as a team.

Saturday, several teams held a moment of silence to remember Forde, including the Yankees and in Kissimmee, where the Mets were playing the Astros.

Forde worked her entire career with the Mets, hired after an internship out of St. John’s. She was one of the first women to reach the rank of Senior Director of Public Relations in baseball and the team was proud to call her a pioneer.

Friday night and Saturday morning, the news spread across baseball with former players Mike Piazza and Cliff Lee offering their condolences to her family on Twitter. Former Mets Justin Turner and Dillon Gee took to Twitter to offer their thoughts on a woman who had made a positive impact on them during their tenures with the Mets.

Wright was particularly close to Forde and spoke for most of the team Saturday morning about how she became a part of their families and a friend.

“In the short time (since the news broke) you have read about the impact I think she had, not just on players, but media and fans,” Wright said. “I know my family. It’s always one of those things, when I had visitors come to the game, Shannon would inevitably come down and meet them and get to know them. And it was almost like they’d leave the stadium thinking they were best friends. Often times they would keep in touch with her.

“She would always come and ask me about a friend who she met months ago,” Wright said. “The impact she made on a number of people was incredible and she’s gonna be missed that’s for sure.”
