West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and opted to chase again, this time against South Africa, in St Kitts. He reckoned that the surface would play the same way as it did during their four-wicket win against Australia on Monday.

While West Indies went in with an unchanged line-up, South Africa made two changes. Allrounder Chris Morris, who was left out for South Africa’s last two games, replaced fast bowler Kyle Abbott, and left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who missed the tri-series opener and South Africa’s last match, came in for Aaron Phangiso. This meant that South Africa fielded two wristspinners, with legspinner Imran Tahir already in the mix.

South Africa captain AB de Villiers conceded that he would have preferred to bowl as well, and called for more responsibility in all departments. Having lost two of three matches before this game, South Africa were placed at the bottom of the points table, and they needed a win to keep pace with table-toppers Australia and hosts West Indies.

West Indies 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Andre Fletcher, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Carlos Brathwaite, 8 Jason Holder (capt), 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Jerome Taylor

South Africa 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Chris Morris, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Imran Tahir
