Keeneland: Maker’s 46 Mile (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 4yo+

MISS TEMPLE CITY (Graham Motion/Drayden van Dyke) showed her worth as she landed a first Grade 1 success with victory over the males in the Maker’s 46 Mile.

Beaten only a couple of lengths in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, the four-year-old filly raced in third place behind front-running pair Heart To Heart and Shining Copper.

Well-fancied Heart To Heart got the better of that pace battle to establish a clear lead, only for former champion apprentice Van Dyke to send 6-1 chance Miss Temple City (received 7lb) after her in the stretch and win going away by a length and a quarter.

Trainer Graham Motion opted to run Miss Temple City in the Maker’s 46 instead of Saturday’s Jenny Wiley against fillies, among them champion female Tepin.

“Tepin’s already beaten the boys – she’s proved she’s one of the best milers in the country, if not the best miler in the country,” Motion said.

“I really wasn’t crazy about running against her and I loved the fact that we got the weight today and Drayden could do the weight. I think this filly is better than she was last year. She’s improved physically. She looks like a colt.”

There was to be no repeat success in this $600,000 event as Forever Unbridled (Dallas Stewart/John Velazquez) completed a Graded-stakes hat-track with her first win at the top level.

The four-year-old stalked Untapable before moving up three wide to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths over longshot Streamline.

Untapable faded late and could finish only fourth, looking a shadow of her former championship-winning self. “Disappointing, very disappointing,” offered her trainer Steve Asmussen.
