Saratoga: Alabama Stakes (Grade 1) 1m2f, dirt, 3yo fillies

SONGBIRD (Jerry Hollendorfer/Mike Smith) extended her unbeaten record to ten with an easy seven-length win in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes.

The talented filly was sent off as the 1-5 favourite to secure a sixth win at the highest level and the result never looked in doubt as she cruised through the contest and asserted before the turn for home, quickly drawing clear of her toiling rivals.

It was the first time that Songbird had run over further than 1m1f but she evidently had no problem seeing out the slightly longer trip as the seven-length victory represented her greatest winning margin to date.

Comfortable

“She makes it looks easy but it’s not easy,” trainer Hollendorfer said. “I just take every race as it comes up and do my best and she does her best.

“This win was real gratifying. First time going a mile-and-quarter and you always think you can do it but you never know until you actually do it.

“It looked like Mike [Smith, jockey] was comfortable the whole race.”

Hollendorfer suggested that the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx next month could be the next port of call for his unbeaten filly.
