Report: USA, Saturday

Tampa Bay Downs: Endeavour Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, turf, 4yo+ f/m

BREEDERS’ CUP MILE winner Tepin (Mark Casse/Julien Leparoux) stretched clear of her rivals for an authoritative victory on her seasonal debut at Tampa Bay.

Sent off 30-100 favourite, the five-year-old sat comfortably in second before taking command easily at the head of the stretch and then kicking clear to score by three and a half lengths.

“It was a perfect scenario for her comeback race,” said jockey Leparoux. “They went slow the first part, which was great, and she relaxed beautiful and finished up strong. There is nothing much I can say except that was perfect. She’s got a big heart and she had a great kick at the end.”

Tepin, who has now won six of her last eight starts, is being aimed for the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland on April 15. A return visit to the Breeders’ Cup remains her primary target for the season.

Tampa Bay Downs: Sam F Davis S (Grade 3) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo

Todd Pletcher can usually be relied upon to mop up a slew of Kentucky Derby preps and he duly took this $250,000 contest with Destin (John Velazquez), a son of Giant’s Causeway who repelled Rafting in the stretch to win by a couple of lengths.

Golden Gate Fields: El Camino Real Derby (Grade 3) 1m1f, AW, 3yo

Frank Conversation (Doug O’Neill/Mario Gutierrez) overcame a wide draw to justify favouritism on the Tapeta for the connections of 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another.

Gulfstream Park: Royal Delta Stakes (Grade 2) 1m½f, dirt, 4yo+ f/m

After pressing the pace, Godolphin five-year-old Penwith (Kiaran McLaughlin/Luis Saez) recorded her first Graded-stakes victory by three lengths.
