HORSES with different markings or colours often attract attention, and in Japan filly Buchiko has developed a huge fan base based on her looks rather than ability.

Although she has a respectable record of three wins from 11 starts, it is her distinctive markings that have captured the imagination, as she bears some resemblance to the pattern of a dalmatian.

Loosely translated her name means ‘Spotted Kid’ or ‘Dappled Girl’ and she certainly lives up to her monikers.

Allegedly purchased by Mario Hofer due to the obvious novelty value of his looks, Silvery Moon could be confused for a cow, but his colouration pattern is classed as “orvero”, which is associated with pinto horses.

Pinto horses have coats that consist of large patches of white and another colour. Now five, Silvery Moon’s performances on the track include a second in a Listed race at Cologne.

Angrove Fatrascal - skewbald gelding

Angrove Fatrascal: could be a history-maker

Angrove Fatrascal

This four-year-old shoulders the dream of breeder Heather Kitching by being the first skewbald to win under rules.

He made his debut in August, finishing last of eight, and has since been pulled up, fell, then pulled up again.

This chestnut boasts a set of rather flashy legs, and he often took the eye when seen in action over fences.

The son of Cyborg has not been seen for nearly a year and is now 13, but has won five times from 32 starts, though was pulled up on his last five runs.

Splash-of-vanilla

Splash Of Vanilla even has her own Facebook page

Palominos are usually associated with being show horses, but in 2009 this filly went under the hammer at Keeneland.

She sold for $14,000 and has her own Facebook page, but her thoroughbred career was low-key and she went back through the ring in 2011.
