CHAMPION CHASE favourite Un De Sceaux and former winner Sire De Grugy are the star names among seven confirmations for Saturday’s Sodexo Clarence House Chase at Ascot.

Dual Cheltenham Festival hero Sprinter Sacre sidesteps the race, but his trainer Nicky Henderson looks likely to saddle Captain Conan in the Grade 1 highlight.

Un De Sceaux enjoyed a fantastic campaign last season, notably winning the Racing Post Arkle on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival and is the sponsor’s 13-8 favourite for the Betway Champion Chase.

The prolific winner will be looking to bounce back to winning ways having fallen at the second-last when seemingly in control on his seasonal reappearance at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Un De Sceaux could be joined at Ascot by his Willie Mullins-trained stablemate Felix Yonger, who is also a Grade 1-winning chaser having landed the BoyleSports Champion Chase at last year’s Punchestown festival.

Home team

Heading the home challenge is Gary Moore’s Sire De Grugy, a five-time Grade 1 winner over fences, who landed this race in stunning style two seasons ago. He arrives in good form having followed up a second win in the Tingle Creek Chase with a gallant effort in defeat behind Sprinter Sacre at Kempton last month.

Vibrato Valtat finished nearly four lengths behind Sire De Grugy at Kempton, having been beaten nearly double that margin at Sandown, and he could renew rivalry for champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who enjoys a healthy lead in this season’s British trainers’ championship.

Nicholls is over £800,000 clear of Mullins, but with £125,000 on offer in Saturday’s race, Ireland’s champion trainer could erode some of the deficit as he chases a first title in Britain.

William Hill ‘out to get’ Un De Sceaux

Un De Sceaux is a best price even-money favourite with William Hill, while Sire De Grugy can be backed at 5-2 with Paddy Power. Felix Yonger and Vibrato Valtat are next in the market at 8-1 and 10-1 respectively.

Explaining William Hill’s top-price stance on Un De Sceaux, spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke said: “Un De Sceaux is clearly a top horse but he’s fallen twice in six chase starts and Sire De Grugy is a worthy adversary. We’re out to get Un De Sceaux.”
