Meydan

IT WAS a great night for jockey Richard Mullen and trainer Satish Seemar, who teamed up to land the Listed Dubawi Stakes for the second year running with Reynaldothewizard.

The ten-year-old also won the equivalent conditions contest in 2013 and completed a double on the card for connections after the success of Tiz Now Tiz Then in the opening mile handicap.

In a rough race, Swedish challenger Let’sgoforit – who had tried to jump out of the parade ring before the race – set a scorching pace, with hot favourite Muarrab struggling to get a clear passage in behind him.

Mullen and Reynaldothewizard, winner of the 2013 Group 1 Golden Shaheen, threw down their challenge and ultimately won comfortably having moved up to challenge at the furlong pole.

Mullen said: “We thought he was in good form as he had been bucking and squealing at home, but he never works well.

“We weren’t the best away but that has probably helped and we had a fast gallop to aim at. Well done to the boss and whole team to get these two veterans back after long breaks.”

The evening got even better for trainer and jockey when More Aspen took the Listed Singspiel Stakes over a mile. Mullen produced the five-year-old mare late on to deny Big Baz, who had looked the likely winner for William Muir.

The beaming jockey said: “What a night!”

River runs away with it
The UAE 1,000 Guineas Trial went to the Doug Watson-trained Polar River, who made it two wins from as many career starts when winning comfortably under Pat Dobbs.

Polar River was an impressive winner of a 6f course maiden in early December when making virtually all, and Dobbs was happy to take a lead from James Doyle on the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Promising Run.

Dobbs switched out early in the straight and Polar River picked up in style, passing the Godolphin filly at the furlong pole to win going away by four and three-quarter lengths.

Dobbs said: “I’m delighted with her; she was well enough away. It was only her second career start and she was green, running in snatches.

“She will have learned a lot and the mile of the Guineas will really suit her.”

Steady does it
The Tom Dascombe-trained Calder Prince made a gallant effort to make all under Richard Kingscote in the UAE 2,000 Guineas Trial, but the market had it right with Godolphin supplying the first two home to open their 2016 carnival account.

The favourite Steady Pace landed the spoils for Saeed Bin Suroor and James Doyle, and they just held the late challenge of Rouleau, representing the Charlie Appleby branch of the team.

The pair were third and fifth respectively behind Shalaa in last year’s Group 1 Middle Park  Stakes at Newmarket.

Very keen early on, Steady Pace was sent after Calder Prince early in the straight but it was well inside the final furlong before he actually hit the front.

Doyle said: “We think he’s our Guineas horse so it’s pleasing he has won. Rather than tiring, he has almost tried to pull himself up close home.

“He’s had to face the kickback so we know that is not an issue and, hopefully, he will stay the extra 200 metres in the Guineas.”
