Twin-spin England win toss and bowl

Sri Lanka enter the series in form after crushing Ireland in Malahide

Eoin Morgan, the England captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first in the first ODI of the Royal London One-Day Series against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge

Reasoning that the pitch has been under cover for several days – the Nottingham area has suffered heavy rain over the last week – he felt that, if there was to be any assistance in the surface for the bowlers, it would come in the opening overs.

Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka captain, admitted he would have chosen to bat first anyway.

Jonny Bairstow and Liam Plunkett have been recalled to the ODI side for the first time since last September as England seek to fill the gaping hole left by the absence of Ben Stokes.

Bairstow has only played 12 ODIs previously but, such has been his prolific form in other formats of the game, he has won a return as a specialist batsman and is expected to bat at No. 5. Jos Buttler will keep wicket for England.

England have chosen to go into the side with only five front-line bowlers – two spinners and three seamers – with Plunkett preferred to both Steven Finn and Chris Jordan.

That is something of a surprise. Jordan seemed to have been developing into the role of death bowler, while Finn was, in June 2013, the No. 2-ranked ODI bowler, according to the ICC. Plunkett, though, offers a little more pace with the ball and a little more ability with the bat. Joe Root is the only option for England should one of the main five bowlers suffer an off day.

Explaining the decision to field two spinners, Morgan suggested it was “a really good wicket and pace off the ball tends to work better than pace on the ball.”

Sri Lanka have made just one change to the team that won the second ODI against Ireland. Nuwan Pradeep, who bowled well without much fortune in the Test series, comes into the side in place of the unfortunate Shaminda Eranga.

England 1 Jason Roy, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Liam Plunkett.

Sri Lanka 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Upul Tharanga, 5 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Dasun Shanaka, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Seekkuge Prasanna, 10 Nuwan Pradeep, 11 Suranga Lakmal
