JOCKEY Adrian Nicholls had a day to forget at Wolverhampton on Saturday after picking up three separate bans for his ride on Sovereign Debt, who, to add insult to injury, was beaten just a nose in the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes.

Riding for his father David, Nicholls went down to rival Mister Universe by the minimum distance on 3-1 favourite Sovereign Debt, the jockey’s only ride of the day.

What happened

Nicholls fell foul of the stewards on two counts of careless riding and for using the whip down the shoulder in the forehand position. He incurred a total ban of five days which will be served from Saturday, March 26 to Wednesday, March 30 inclusive.

The stewards found he was slow to correct his mount from lugging left which resulted in third-placed Realize being tightened for room, while they also deemed him to be responsible for allowing Sovereign Debt to edge left under a right-hand drive without correction, intimidating the winner Mister Universe off its intended line.

Nicholls said: “The stewards were just doing their job – I’m not going to argue with them. I obviously did something wrong but I was just trying my best. I accept the punishment.”

Asked whether he had ever received more than one ban in a race before, Nicholls said: “I’m not sure – but it would certainly be unusual to get three!”

Solid comeback

Nicholls did have one positive to cling onto: the encouraging performance of Sovereign Debt on his first run of the year.

The rider added: “It was disappointing to get beat but he ran a good race on his first run back, carrying a 5lb penalty, and [Mister Universe] was tough and battled back well. Hopefully he’ll build on that.”

Bookmakers Coral also took a positive view of the horse’s performance as they trimmed Sovereign Debt into 7-2 second favourite for the Ladbrokes All-Weather Mile Championships at Lingfield on Good Friday, a race in which he finished an unlucky-in-running second last year.
