MS Dhoni, the Rising Pune Supergiants captain, chose to bat on a Eden Gardens surface that he reckoned “may slow down” as the game wears on. Supergiants made two changes with legspinner M Ashwin and allrounder Irfan Pathan replacing RP Singh and Rajat Bhatia.

Irfan was playing his second game of the season while M Ashwin returned after missing Supergiants’ previous two matches because of a side strain. Supergiants, at the bottom of the table, were already out of the tournament, and Dhoni said he wanted to test the bowling depth.

Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, conceded he preferred to bat first. Knight Riders made two changes as well: Sunil Narine recovered from the finger injury that forced him out of Knight Riders’ last two games and took chinaman bowler Brad Hogg’s spot, while Umesh Yadav came in for Ankit Rajpoot in a like-for-like swap.

The hosts were placed fourth with six wins in ten games. They need a win tonight to stay in the top four.
