Steve Spagnuolo up next to interview with Giants

The last two times Steve Spagnuolo was a defensive coordinator he presided over two of the three worst defenses in NFL history.

Now he gets to try to convince John Mara why he should be the Giants’ next head coach.

The popular, 56-year-old “Spags” is the next candidate up in the Giants’ “extensive” search for Tom Coughlin’s replacement, with his interview expected to take place on Thursday, according to a team source. He’ll be the second candidate to interview for the job, after Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo interviewed on Tuesday.

The case for McAdoo, who will also interview for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching job on Thursday, was much easier to make. His offense ranked sixth in the NFL this season and he came with the endorsement of Giants quarterback Eli Manning. As well-loved as Spagnuolo is, though, he has to answer for the Giants’ NFL-worst defense which gave up 6,725 yards — the highest total in franchise history.

FIVE STEPS TO FIX THE GIANTS

The worst-ever NFL defense were the 2012 Saints who gave up 7,042 total yards. Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator for that team, too.

Of course there were extenuating circumstances in both situations. In 2012, the Saints were reeling from the BountyGate scandal and dealing with turmoil, player suspensions, and the year-long suspension of Sean Payton, their head coach. Last season with the Giants, even Mara acknowledged they were “obviously lacking” in quality defensive players, especially after their best pass rusher, Jason Pierre-Paul, blew up his hand in a fireworks accident and ended up missing half the season.

But Spagnuolo will still have some explaining to do.

“I think he did the best he could with what he had,” Mara said on Tuesday. “I want to hear from him what he felt about how we performed there, what improvements he would make going forward. He’ll have that opportunity to explain that.”

Spagnuolo — who was the St. Louis Rams head coach from 2009-11 and went 1-15, 7-9, and 2-14 — is probably a longshot for the Giants job. He is also only the second of what is expected to be at least six candidates to interview. According to league sources, Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase will interview on Friday and Jaguars assistant head coach Doug Marrone will interview on Saturday.

The Giants are also planning to interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and are considering interviewing Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, but both of their teams are in the playoffs and it wasn’t immediately clear if interviews with either one have been set.

No interviews were conducted on Wednesday because Mara was in Manhattan meeting with members of the NFL’s Los Angeles Relocation Committee and other key owners.
