PAUL NICHOLLS says Vibrato Valtat will appreciate a step up in trip as he eyes the Grade One Ryanair Chase for his Haldon Gold Cup winner.

The seven-year-old is due to line up in Saturday’s Grade 1 Sodexo Clarence House Chase at Ascot over 2m, having also contested the Tingle Creek and Desert Orchid Chase this campaign.

He is likely to face Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase favourite Un Des Sceaux this weekend but Nicholls says it is unlikely the pair will lock horns again come the Cheltenham festival in March.

Speaking in today’s Racing Post, the champion trainer said: “Vibrato Valtat is entered in the Champion Chase but I suspect he’ll run in the Ryanair.

“He goes to Ascot on Saturday but he’s crying out for a trip now.”

Long-term aim

Nicholls has four runners entered for the Ryanair Chase but says Sound Investment, third in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November, is the most likely candidate to join Vibrato Valtat in the race.

“Sound Investment is definitely going for the Ryanair,” he said.

“He’s going to have a run somewhere, possibly at Ascot but this has always been my aim for him since his last couple of runs under top weight.”

Back to hurdles for Zig

Talented seven-year-old Ptit Zig has failed to complete in his last two starts over fences, with vital jumping errors proving costly, and Nicholls revealed the Grade 1-winning hurdler is to revert to the smaller obstacles at Cheltenham on January 30.

“Ptit Zig has obviously had his problems jumping and he’s going to the Cleeve Hurdle next, so we’ll decide after that where we go with him.

“Our other entry, Salubrious, will go down the handicap route.”
