LEADING rider Sam Twiston-Davies has given his support to the current whip rules amid renewed controversy regarding the long-running issue.

Brian Hughes, who along with Twiston-Davies was singled out by the BHA for praise having not collected a single whip suspension in 2015, on Friday urged the sport’s governing body to increase the number of times a jump jockey can use the stick from eight to ten, though Paul Nicholls’ stable jockey disagrees.

Twiston-Davies, who partners Nicholls’ Vivaldi Collonges in Saturday’s feature Grade 3 Betfred Classic Chase at Warwick, feels recent statistics prove the whip rules are working.

Stats read well

Writing in his exclusive Racing Post column, he said: “The whip issue is back in the news following a couple of high-profile incidents. It’s unfortunate because I really don’t think there is too much wrong with the rules as they stand.

“There was a table in yesterday’s Racing Post relating to the top five jockeys last year which showed that only five whip bans were dished out among that group from a total of nearly 4,000 rides. Surely that suggests the current rules are working well?”

‘System in my head’

Twiston-Davies, who has ridden 80 winners so far this season, also revealed the system he uses to steer clear of picking up a whip ban.

He said: “The table showed that I didn’t get a single whip ban last year, and I believe there is a good reason for that.

“Basically I have a system in my head, by which I keep the stick up my sleeve for as long as I possibly can. Without tempting fate, it seems to work and has served me well.

“I certainly don’t agree with calls for the disqualification of horses whose riders break the whip rules. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. We’re only human. That really would be going a step too far.”
