Ruben Tejada is now a former Met as the shortstop is released on Wednesday.

PORT ST. LUCIE – Ruben Tejada, beloved after having his leg broken in last year’s playoffs, is a Met no more.

The shortstop cleared waivers and was released by the Mets Wednesday afternoon.

As the News reported first, the Mets came into spring training planning to cut ties with the 26-year old Panamanian, despite the fact he had recently become a Mets fan favorite after being the victim of Chase Utley’s slide tackle in the playoffs. He was welcomed at Citi Field with standing ovations throughout the playoffs.

Sources told the News last month that they were looking to move Tejada and prepared to cut him before Opening Day to make sure his $3 million salary was never guaranteed.

Industry sources said that the Mets had received calls on Tejada before he went on waivers Monday, but Tejada’s salary was the hang-up. The Mets were looking for a backup catcher and/or a veteran right-handed bat to add to their bench in return for Tejada, but never found a taker.

Despite new-found folk hero status, Tejada was never in the Mets’ long-term plans.

Tejada is a career .255 hitter who had annoyed the Mets with his work ethic in the past and his fate was seemingly sealed even before spring training started.
