J.T. Miller’s (r.) two goals seal the deal for the Rangers in Friday night’s 4-1 rout of the Hurricanes.

RALEIGH – The Rangers couldn’t have had more fun beating the Hurricanes, 4-1, Friday night if they’d bagged their 47th game of the season and gone sledding down the unusually wintry North Carolina hills outside.

J.T. Miller scored twice in the second period to quell any chance of a Carolina comeback from a 2-0 Ranger lead built on first-period goals by defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Keith Yandle. Second-year center Kevin Hayes and veteran pivot Derek Stepan both forced Hurricanes turnovers that led to goals, and the Rangers (26-16-5, 57 points) won their second straight game for the first time since Nov. 21 and 23.

Henrik Lundqvist wasn’t always busy but saw the puck extremely well and made several big stops in the third period, when the Rangers started turning the puck over and were outshot, 13-1, but didn’t give up a goal.

Miller, 22, has been one of the Rangers’ best and hardest working players all season. He leads the team in both road goals and road points. He carried over momentum from his overtime winning goal at home Tuesday night against Vancouver to score his 11th and 12th goals of the season Friday just 130 seconds apart, at 9:41 and 11:51, for a 4-1 lead by second intermission.

Miller’s first goal was the biggest of the game. Carolina forward Joakim Nordstrom narrowed the Rangers’ lead to 2-1 just 3:29 into the second period after veteran defenseman Dan Boyle stopped playing while looking for a high sticking penalty that the officials had missed – another reminder that healthy scratched rookie Dylan McIlrath should be playing.

But Stepan pressured Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk into a turnover that Jesper Fast touched to Miller for a roofed wrist shot for the 3-1 lead at 9:41. Then Miller stripped Canes defenseman Jaccob Slavin of the puck two minutes later and juked Carolina goalie Eddie Lack out of his pads for the three-goal advantage.

The Blueshirts improved to an astonishing 19-1-0 in their last 20 meetings with the Hurricanes, winning their ninth straight in the lopsided head-to-head divisional series. Carolina (21-20-8, 50 points) has not been the same doormat of recent years but was far from up to the task on the second night of a back-to-back.

McDonagh aggressively stepped in the neutral zone to pick off a John-Michael Liles pass just behind center ice, drove hard across the blue line and ticketed a wrist shot to the near top corner over Lack’s right shoulder for a 1-0 lead at 14:01 and his sixth goal of the season.

The Rangers gained steam, outshooting the Canes 12-5 in the final 11:59 of the first period. Hayes then hassled Carolina rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin into a turnover at the end of an excellent shift by linemates Viktor Stalberg and Oscar Lindberg, before Hayes and Lindberg set up Yandle for a dunk and his third goal of the season at 17:53 for a 2-0 lead going into the locker room.

Yandle’s goal marked just the third time all season two Rangers defensemen have scored a goal in the same game, and the first time since Nov. 12 against St. Louis.

The Rangers won despite playing without Chris Kreider (neck spasms), their hottest forward recently with three goals and five points in the team’s four prior games coming in.

Veteran Daniel Paille, 31, signed Thursday, hustled and was fine in his Ranger debut on the fourth line with Tanner Glass and Dominic Moore and on the penalty kill unit he was signed to improve. With Paille on the roster, the Rangers sent forward Jayson Megna back to the AHL.

“It permits us to have a more aggressive look and faster-paced killing,” Vigneault said of Paille’s signing, which he feels will give him three “duos” of penalty-killing forwards who can play more aggressively and rotate quickly.

Top-line left wing Rick Nash had to be helped off the ice 30 seconds into the third period after spinning out awkwardly on a back-check and crashing right-shoulder first into the boards. He returned to the bench midway through the period and played, but then he took a Faulk power play blast to the knee that caused him to hobble off later in the third.

The Rangers’ original plan was to fly their charter plane to Ottawa immediately following Friday’s game, but the weekend’s torrid winter storm grounded them overnight at least and likely meant a brief Saturday morning practice at PNC Arena before departing for Sunday’s 3 p.m. start in Ottawa
