Rangers recall Marek Hrivik for Sunday's game vs. Red Wings

The Rangers recalled forward Marek Hrivik from the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday at noon to make his NHL debut in the night’s home game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Hrivik, 24, is a forward with a big frame and skating ability who GM Jeff Gorton and coach Alain Vigneault are hoping can help their ailing forward depth and penalty kill.

The team released veteran winger Daniel Paille on Saturday less than a month after signing him for those needs. It was the second failed experiment to upgrade the 28th-ranked penalty kill following the December release of Jarret Stoll, who had been signed in the offseason.

The Rangers are still trying to fill the holes created by the offseason trade of Carl Hagelin to Anaheim. Hagelin signed has been dealt to the rival Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hrivik, a Slovakian originally signed as an undrafted free agent on May 30, 2012, stands 6-2, 205 pounds and has a right-handed shot.

He has skated in 246 career AHL games over parts of five seasons with the Blueshirts’ AHL affiliate, previously the Connecticut Whale and now the Hartford Wolf Pack. He has 40 goals and 115 points, a plus-six rating and 60 penalty minutes in that time.

Hrivik had a strong training camp in Vigneault’s first season with the team in the fall of 2014. He was one of the final cuts, along with Oscar Lindberg, but now both players are on the NHL roster.

In addition to the penalty kill, Vigneault is seeking significant improvement from the fourth line he had previously assembled of Paille, Dominic Moore and Tanner Glass. Hrivik may play on that line, but it’s also possible that a good skater like Viktor Stalberg may return to a role he played earlier in the season.

It’s also possible that Lindberg could receive a demotion to the fourth line, where he might benefit from working on the details of his game after a horrendous outing in Toronto on Thursday. He wasn’t the only one that night, but two inexplicable penalties stood out.
