There’s never been love lost between the Rangers and Flyers, and that sure didn’t change Sunday on Valentine’s Day.

Eight days after Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh was concussed by a gloved left-jab by the Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds, which kept McDonagh out for his fourth straight game on Sunday, fireworks erupted just 39 seconds into the Rangers 3-1 win over Philadelphia at the Garden.

After Simmonds and Dylan McIlrath chatted at the red line during warmups, the two agreed to drop the gloves on the second shift of the game, and the officials weren’t quick to break it up. When Simmonds took the ice for the faceoff, Alain Vigneault sent McIlrath, who was paired with Dan Boyle for most of the game, out with Marc Staal. Each fighter exchanged some big punches while McIlrath drew blood, cutting Simmonds, who was booed by the crowd all night, above his left eye.

Twenty seconds after play restarted, Tanner Glass and Ryan White fought for about 25 seconds. Mats Zuccarello and Chris VandeVelde each were assessed cross-checking minors at 4:14, crowding the penalty boxes three apiece.

Derick Brassard scored at 5:08 when he flew by Mark Streit up the left wing, skated around the net and finished with a wraparound which just snuck in between Steve Mason’s left skate and the right post. The goal was Brassard’s 19th of the season, which ties a career-high.

The Rangers (32-18-6, 70 points), who won for the fifth time in their last six games, doubled their lead at 10:34 of the third when Derek Stepan scored the first of his two goals. Zuccarello backhanded a pass from the right circle across the face of goal, drawing Mason out of the crease, and Derek Stepan finished on a wide-open net. Stepan scored 12 seconds into a power play at 13:54 for his 12th goal of the season, finishing off a tic-tac-toe play from Brassard to Zuccarello to Stepan in the left circle. The Rangers were 1-for-4 on the power play.

Henrik Lundqvist nearly posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2013 playoffs when he shut out the Capitals in Games 6 and 7 of the first round, but Brayden Schenn scored for the Flyers (24-21-11, 58 points) with 9.7 seconds left in the game. They had a six-on-four as they were on a power play and pulled Mason in the final minutes. Lundqvist finished with 21 saves.

Vigneault and the players tried to keep the focus off of any possible retribution after Saturday’s practice for Simmonds’ actions, though it was clear they weren’t going to let it go. Sunday morning, Brassard said it was “frustrating” that McDonagh wasn’t available for a big game because of Simmonds’ punch and said they’d go hard on Simmonds if they had to.

McDonagh worked out vigorously on the ice at the Garden Sunday morning after returning to practice Saturday but wasn’t yet cleared for contact.
