The severity of Ryan McDonagh’s hand issue is still unclear.

The Rangers have yet to give a specific update on Ryan McDonagh’s right hand injury, but the call-up of rookie Brady Skjei to fill in on the left side Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning is a bad sign.

Skjei, 22, the organization’s top defensive prospect who has played in four games this season, was expected to be recalled after McDonagh injured himself blocking a Brandon Dubinsky shot in the first period of Monday night’s playoff clinching win in Columbus.

But any long-term absence of the Rangers’ top defenseman and captain is obviously a huge blow.

Coach Alain Vigneault presumably will have an update when he addresses the media at 5:30 p.m. at the Garden.
