THE Betfred Midlands Grand National is an extremely competitive handicap and, as is often the case in such races, David Pipe has a strong record.

The trainer was responsible for four winners in a row prior to last year, when the Jim Dreaper-trained Goonyella snapped the sequence.

Both stables, as well as that of Jonjo O’Neill – the only other successful trainer this decade – are represented this afternoon in a race with a boosted prize of £130,000.

Pipe runs a novice, Katkeau, as well as Standing Ovation, who is a veteran of many similar staying handicaps.

“Katkeau has top weight, but this is essentially a limited handicap as there’s only a stone between top and bottom,” said the trainer. “The ground should suit and, if he stays, we’d like to think he’ll go well.

“The drier the better for Standing Ovation. We’ve always wanted to try him over this kind of trip.”

Coal ready to fire

Dreaper appears to hold the strongest single card with Irish National third Sizing Coal.

“He’d probably prefer slower ground but he’s well and on his third in last year’s Irish National you’d think he should stay the longer distance,” the trainer said.

A host of other entries will also be familiar to any followers of long-distance handicap chases. Shotgun Paddy, seen most recently when chasing home easy Eider winner Rocking Blues, runs from the same mark.

Less exposed horses tend to be the most popular in the market, however, and it is another novice, the Neil King-trained Milansbar, who shares favouritism with Sizing Coal on most lists.

He also shares top weight with Katkeau, the pair having a total of seven runs over fences between them.

The ground on the chase course has been described as soft, good to soft in places and the Midlands National is due off at 4.10.
