Ever the outside thinker, Phil Jackson compares Stephen Curry to former point guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.

If you think there’s never been a basketball player like Stephen Curry, Phil Jackson has some knowledge to share that could make you rethink things.

Or maybe not.

Former NBA point guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was in the same league as Stephen Curry, suggests Phil Jackson.

The Knicks President took to Twitter to compare Curry to a much lesser-heralded sharpshooter from the NBA’s recent past.

“Never seen anything like SCurry? Remind you of Chris Jackson/ Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who had a short but brilliant run in NBA?” the Zen Master asked Sunday, a day after the Warriors superstar broke the league’s single-season three-point record.

Abdul-Rauf, the third overall pick of the 1990 draft, twice led the league in free-throw shooting during an nine-year NBA career that included stints with the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings and Vancouver Grizzlies, but never came close to the numbers that Curry has put up in recent years.

And unlike the image-friendly Curry, Abdul-Rauf was anything but, famously refusing to acknowledge “The Star-Spangled Banner” before games, claiming the National Anthem and U.S. flag were a symbol of American oppression throughout the world.

This un-Zenlike attitude did little to endear him to fans, but Phil Jackson still thinks highly of Abdul-Rauf. The suggestion that he’s in the same league as Curry, however, seems as tough to grasp as a triangle offense.
