VICTORIA PENDLETON aims to take another step towards competing in the St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival next month when riding in two point-to-point races this weekend.

Pendleton, who suffered a setback in her road to Cheltenham when unseating on her first jumps ride under rules aboard Pacha Du Polder at Fakenham earlier this month, partners Alan Hill’s eight-year-old Supreme Danehill in a members’ race for novice riders at 1.35 at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire on Saturday. She is due to ride stablemate According To Sarah at Larkhill, Wiltshire on Sunday.

More schooling

Paul Nicholls earlier confirmed that the Olympic sprint cycle champion will ride Pacha Du Polder for a second time under rules at Wincanton on Wednesday before a decision will be made as to whether she will be ready to contest the leading amateur contest on the final day of the Festival.

The champion trainer said on The Morning Line on Channel 4: “Victoria is coming to school Pacha Du Polder on Monday and he is going to run at Wincanton on Wednesday – then we will make a decision after we see how we get on in the week.”

Pacha Du Polder is a general 33-1 shot to land Festival glory in the 3m2f chase which follows the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday March 18.

‘Nice pop round’

Speaking on Pendleton’s rides this weekend, Lawney Hill, wife of trainer Alan, said: “It will be great for Victoria to gain some more experience over the weekend before hopefully riding in a hunter chase in the week.

“Hopefully she will enjoy a nice pop round at Horseheath today and it would be great if she could run into a place.”
