VICTORIA PENDLETON is set to embark on the next step towards fulfilling her ambition of riding at the Cheltenham Festival by tackling her first jumps race under rules on Friday week.

The dual Olympic cycling champion, who has been gaining valuable experience in the point-to-point sphere, has been earmarked to partner the Paul Nicholls-trained Pacha Du Polder in the hunter chase at Fakenham.

Pendleton, who is aiming to ride in next month’s St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase, has yet to register a winner on the Flat or in point-to-points, coming closest when beaten in a photo on her likely Cheltenham mount Pacha Du Polder.

Speaking in his Betfair blog, Nicholls said: “Fakenham is the logical target after their excellent debut together when they failed by inches to land a point-to-point at Milborne St Andrew on January 31.

“It is important for Victoria to gain experience in a hunter chase before considering a tilt at the ultimate challenge of riding in the St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase.

“The race over three miles at Fakenham, an easy track, looks ideal and comes at a perfect time before Cheltenham. Pacha Du Polder is a very classy chaser, a brilliant jumper, travels well in his races, has smart form over Aintree’s National fences and showed he stayed three miles at Milborne St Andrew.”
