PAUL GILLIGAN, trainer of several big-race winners including Albert Bartlett victor Berties Dream at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival, could face a a suspension of his training licence after being found to have knowingly entered an unqualified horse at Uttoxeter in June 2014.

After Dubawi Phantom won the bet365 Handicap Hurdle on the 29th of June 2014, worth over £9,000 to the winner, it was alleged that the gelding had previously run at an unrecognised flapping meeting in Ireland.

The BHA announced on Tuesday that Gilligan had been found in breach of rule (A)29.1, which states that: ‘A person who knows or believes that a horse is not qualified for a race must not enter the horse in the race.’

Dubawi Phantom disqualified

As a result of the BHA’s verdict, Dubawi Phantom has been disqualified under rule (A)74, Ground 4 of the rules of racing.

Gilligan reached the height of his career in the spring of 2010, when Jadanli took the Grade 1 Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse just weeks after Berties Dream had won at Cheltenham, the two wins helping him finish in the top 20 of the Irish trainers’ championship that season. Jadanli also won the Thyestes Chase in January 2013.

The entry point for a penalty involving a breach of rule (A)29.1 is a £1,000 fine or a three-month suspension of his licence. The maximum punishment is a three-year suspension. The BHA Panel will publish the penalties and reasons in due course.
