Panthers Josh Norman taking out the trash for NFC title game

Josh Norman knows he will be under the microscope after his all-out brawl with Odell Beckham Jr. a few weeks ago.

CHARLOTTE — Josh Norman knows what you’re thinking.

You saw the Carolina Panthers cornerback go at it in all the wrong ways with Odell Beckham Jr. a month ago, making his biggest plays after the whistle and jawing with the volatile Giants receiver. So you think he’s a trash talker.

But it’s all an act, he says.

“The whole acting of me talking trash to other people . . . I don’t talk unless you talk to me,” Norman said Thursday.

Well, sort of.

“They want to take it there,” he added, “we’ll go there.”

Norman doesn’t plan on going there this week. He’s too busy prepping to face the Arizona Cardinals in Sunday’s NFC title game at Bank of America Stadium, too amped to make his final statement when it comes to earning some personal hardware.

“I don’t know, man,” he said when asked if he has anything to prove on Sunday. “I didn’t get (the) Defensive Player of the Year Award so yes I do.”

Best defender or not, the fourth-year corner has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season, a campaign that’s seen him blossom into one of the NFL’s best cover men and grow so popular that he says he is “in talks” to make a guest appearance on HBO’s “Ballers” in 2016. And now, the corner who fancies himself an actor (and claims he’s acting when he’s yapping) knows he’s a game away from football’s biggest stage.

And that means a chance to show that playing corner can be about more than shutting down a receiver, he said.

“Playing corner is more so an art form,” Norman said. “Because there’s so much you can do, but not really. So if somebody don’t throw you the ball, OK, what more of an impact can you do than just being on the field? Going out for the sack, playing coverage so well you get a tackle?”

Beckham and Norman go at it in Week 13.

He goes on.

“I put a little more color to it than sitting out there on an island,” he said. “That’s why I call it an art. Don’t just be out there. Put something on canvas. Paint a little bit.”

Norman expects to get plenty of chances to paint on Sunday, against a Cardinals offense that’s as dangerous as any unit that Carolina has faced this season. Behind quarterback Carson Palmer, Arizona led the league in scoring (30.6 points per game) and finished second in passing yardage (4,616 yards).

The Cards have won 10 of their last 11 games behind coach Bruce Arians’ ultra-aggressive play-calling, and Norman doesn’t expect that to change, even if Charlotte is a winter wonderland come Sunday.

“This is an offense that will try to come in here and put the ball in the air,” he said. “They’ll probably come in here and try to throw it 50 times a game. That’s the games you live for. My ears (are) pinned back and ready to ride.”

He added that he can’t wait to cover the “special talent” that is Cards receiver Larry Fitzgerald. And he expects Palmer, who threw 11 interceptions during the regular season but was picked off twice by Green Bay in the divisional playoffs, will be sharp.

“That’s why I’m so amped,” Norman said. “That matchup I can’t be more happier for.”

So happy that he’s not talking trash.

Yet.
