CHARLOTTE – Cam Newton probably didn’t need to leap headlong over the helpless defender standing between him and the goal line, probably could have just run easily into the end zone.

That didn’t stop him from leaping anyway.

So there the Carolina Panthers’ all-everything quarterback was, with 2:14 to play in the third quarter of an NFC championship game that already felt over, racing down the right sideline, blockers clearing his path, only Arizona Cardinals safety Tony Jefferson standing in his way. And as he approached the goal line and Jefferson went low, Newton exploded upwards and went horizontal, bowling Jefferson over and collapsing into the end zone.

One old-school quarterback down, one to go. On Sunday, Newton starred in a 49-15 demolition of the Arizona Cardinals, in an NFC title game that seemed more like a coronation all night long. In a raucous Bank of America Stadium, Newton and the mighty Panthers punched their ticket to Super Bowl 50 by eviscerating a high-powered Arizona team as the Cards’ own MVP candidate quarterback, Carson Palmer, turned to mush.

Peyton Manning, this is what awaits you in Santa Clara in two weeks. If the Denver Broncos’ QB wants to go out on top, he’ll have to survive a suffocating defense that harassed the veteran Palmer into six turnovers, including four in a nightmare second quarter. And he’ll have to upstage the dominant Newton, who rushed for two TDs and passed for two more, piloting an offense that raced to a 17-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Panthers advanced to their first Super Bowl in 13 years.

Newton powered an offense that topped 30 points for the third straight game and the seventh game in eight outings, and one week after nearly blowing a big lead against the Seattle Seahawks, the unit never let up. And the defensive effort may have been even better, forcing Palmer, who threw just 11 picks during the regular season, into four interceptions.

LAST TIME THE PANTHERS MADE SUPER BOWL WAS NIPPLEGATE

Palmer’s third came with 5:11 to play , when he was picked off by linebacker Luke Keuchly, who returned it 21 yards for a 49-15 lead. Forty-one seconds later, he threw his fourth to a diving Tre Boston. Arizona turned the ball over seven times overall.

This one had the makings of a rout from the very start. For a second straight week Palmer, who entered Sunday with just one career playoff win, started the game with a case of postseason butterflies, completing just 1-of-5 passes two fruitless Arizona drives, running for his life regularly.

The Panthers capitalized quickly. A 45-yard Graham Gano field goal on Carolina’s opening drive started the scoring, and Panthers’ second drive ended with Ted Ginn Jr. scoring on a play out of a high school playbook, taking a handoff from Newton on second-and-3 from the Cards 22 and dashing left to the 10. Ginn seemed bottled up there, but then he reversed field, cutting all the way across the grain and waltzing untouched into the end zone, a 22-yard score that set the tone for the evening.

Palmer seemed to get going on the next drive, piloting the Cards near midfield before Arizona was forced to punt again. But that only set the stage for an even more explosive Panthers score. With 1:03 left to go in the first quarter, Newton dropped back on third-and-8 from his own 14, surveyed the field and rifled a deep pass near midfield to receiver Philly Brown, who broke past safety Rashad Johnson and into the end zone for an 86-yard score and a 17-0 edge.

It was that kind of game for the Panthers, who thrived even when they did make mistakes. With 1:12 left in the first half, Newton made his lone poor decision of the game, overshooting tight end Ed Dickson on a deep pass and getting intercepted by Patrick Peterson, who returned it all the way to the Carolina 22, briefly giving the Cards new life.

But just a play later, Palmer dropped back and launched a pass for John Brown to the end zone. It was intercepted by safety Kurt Coleman, standing at the goal line.
