‘Edgbaston pedigree a factor in Finn choice’

Yasir Shah will again have the challenge of bowling on a first-day pitch after Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss and decided to bowl at Edgbaston. There has been rain leading up to the match, there was some cloud around and Misbah did not believe the pitch would break up.

Pakistan have made two changes with Sami Aslam, the 20-year-old opener, replacing Shan Masood at the top of the order and Sohail Khan, the right-arm paceman, replacing Wahab Riaz in the pace attack. Aslam has previously played two Tests against Bangladesh while Sohail also has two previous appearances, his last being against Zimbabwe in 2011.

England’s side was confirmed yesterday with Steven Finn recalled ahead of Jake Ball to replace the injured Ben Stokes. The middle order duo of James Vince and Gary Ballance remain under pressure, especially the former who has yet to pass fifty in five Tests, while much continues to rest on Alastair Cook, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow.

England enjoy coming to Birmingham – they have not lost here since 2008 – and last year reclaimed the Ashes lead with a crushing three-day victory. They are usually cheered on by the most vocal support in the country, although Pakistan may not lack for wholehearted backing.

England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Joe Root, 4 James Vince, 5 Gary Ballance, 6 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Steven Finn, 11 James Anderson

Pakistan 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Sami Aslam, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Sohail Khan, 11 Rahat Ali
