FROSTY BERRY sprung a 50-1 surprise when getting the better of a good tussle with proven Group-race performer Clever Cookie at Nottingham.

Frosty Berry, who had been a prolific winner at a lesser level over the winter, produced a much improved performance up in grade to get the better of 4-6 favourite Clever Cookie by a neck. The pair pulled five lengths clear of Seismos in third.

Cookie thwarted

Much of the pre-race discussion revolved around the return of Clever Cookie, who had signed off last season by finishing runner-up in the Group 2 Qipco Long Distance Cup at Ascot on Champions Day.

Those who took the odds-on about Clever Cookie would have been on good terms with themselves as the favourite loomed up three furlongs out to tackle long-time leader Nearly Caught, but Frosty Berry was travelling well in behind and found enough under pressure to assert in the final furlong.

The seven-year-old mare has thrived since joining Ed De Giles last year and has now won five of her six starts since joining the yard, ridden to victory on each occasion by Shane Gray.

Pleasant surprise

Frosty Berry’s handicap mark of 82 was some 31lb lower than Clever Cookie’s rating and trainer Ed De Giles admitted that he hadn’t been expecting to topple the market leader.

“We knew she would handle the ground but we came here for black type rather than expecting to win. She ran a great race at a track that didn’t suit at Lingfield last time and we didn’t expect her to finish last. She needs this sort of ground so we might run her again shortly,” De Giles said.

Clever Cookie’s trainer Peter Niven was understandably a bit disappointed by the reverse and said: “We didn’t come here expecting to get beat but these things happen.”

Betfair SP

Frosty Berry’s Betfair starting price was a massive 142.4, while Clever Cookie was matched at an in-running low of 1.17.
