Yes, it could happen. And no, it wouldn’t be the first time that a venerable coach jumped from one end of a storied NFL rivalry to another here are four other coaches who had no problem playing the role of turncoat:

Bill Parcells caps his coaching career by leading the arch rival Dallas Cowboys for three seasons.

BILL PARCELLS

The master of jumping from rival to rival, something showcased by a coaching career that started with the Giants (from 1983-1990) and ended with the rival Cowboys of all teams (from 2003-2006). In between working for those hated NFC East rivals, Parcells coached the Patriots from 1993-1996. But after the 1996 season, he wanted out of New England. His contract didn’t permit him to coach elsewhere, but that didn’t stop the Jets from bringing him on in an “advisory” role, which really tweaked the Pats. Eventually Paul Tagliabue, then NFL commish, brokered a deal between the two clubs, and Parcells took over as coach for three seasons. And when he was done in 1999? After a few years off, he completed the cycle of rival-coaching by taking over Dallas.

BILL BELICHICK

Not very long before he became the coach of the hated Patriots, Belichick was supposed to be the star of the Jets. When Parcells stepped down in 1999, Belichick was to be his successor, but one day after being named head coach, he stunningly decided to step down, resigning just before giving his first presser as Jets head man. Just months after that, he joined the New England Patriots. And well, you know the rest.

MIKE SHANAHAN

Shanahan’s first head coaching job came as the lead man for the Raiders from 1988-1989, and he was supposed to help revive the franchise. But the coach clashed with owner Al Davis’ hands-on methods very early on, and he was gone after less than two seasons, with an 8-12 record. It was six years until Shanahan’s next heading coaching gig in 1995, when he took over the Denver Broncos, and this time, he led them to all the success he didn’t attain with the Raiders, winning two Super Bowls and routinely dominating his old club.

You know this one: Ryan coached the Jets from 2009-2014, leading the club to two AFC title games. But things gradually fell apart, and Ryan was out at as head coach after the 2014 season. His unemployment didn’t last long, though as the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills quickly scooped Ryan up last January. And guess who kept the Jets out of the playoffs this year? Yup, it was Ryan, whose Bills swept the Jets and beat them in Week 17, when Gang Green controlled it’s own destiny.
