Newcastle most vexing team – McClaren

Steve McClaren shouts instructions

Manager Steve McClaren has described Newcastle as “the most frustrating side I’ve ever worked with”.

The Magpies sit 18th in the Premier League, having won six games and lost 14 this season.

“We were fantastic against West Brom [winning 1-0] and then lost 5-1 [against Chelsea]. It’s one extreme to the other,” McClaren complained.

McClaren, 54, has also managed Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby and England.

Many of these spells have also been marked by unpredictability, with last season’s Championship campaign with Derby seeing the Rams top of the table in February after a run of eight wins in 11 games, only to finish eighth after winning just two of their last 13 matches.

McClaren’s England career saw the national team fail to qualify for Euro 2008 after losing to Russia and twice to Croatia.

Newcastle visit Stoke on Wednesday evening.
