Betfair Denman Chase (Grade 2) 2m7½f, 5yo+

HOUBLON DES OBEAUX roared back to form with a commanding win in this Grade 2 race, going well clear coming out of the back straight and scoring by a street from three tired rivals.

The Venetia Williams-trained 3-1 shot scored by 28 lengths from The Giant Bolster (9-1), with long-time pacesetter Splash Of Ginge (16-1) another 21 lengths behind in third. Rocky Creek, the 2-1 favourite, was the only other finisher.

First-time cheekpieces

Wearing cheekpieces for the first time, Houblon Des Obeaux took over the running from Splash Of Ginge towards the end of the back straight on the final circuit and jockey Aidan Coleman never looked back as he quickly opened a decisive lead.

This was the best form the nine-year-old winner had shown since his seven-length second to Coneygree in this race last year and his first victory since December 2013.

“I’ve been wondering how long it was going to take me to put cheekpieces on him and I thought now’s the time – with a relatively small field on a racecourse where he’s done really well in the past,” said Williams.

I’m thrilled to bits. If you go back to his form in this race last year, what was there to beat him? But we haven’t seen so much of ‘Houby’ since then.”

Weak renewal

This race usually points towards the Cheltenham Gold Cup but this was an unusually weak renewal (with four of the seven runners having failed to complete last time) and seems unlikely to have the same big-race impact.

Houblon Des Obeaux certainly won’t be heading to the festival, according to Williams. “We’ve never seen the best of him at Cheltenham and whatever we do we won’t be going there,” she said.
