Nets offer GM job to Spurs assistant Sean Marks: report

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is reportedly looking to take a page out of the Spurs’ book – and a person out of their front office – while hiring a new GM.

With the Nets desperately searching for an identity as well as a general manager and head coach − not to mention first-round draft picks − dipping into the San Antonio Spurs organization is not a bad start.

The Nets have offered their vacant GM job to Sean Marks, the Spurs’ assistant GM and former assistant coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Marks, the first New Zealand-born player in the NBA, was drafted by the Knicks in the second round in 1998. Although he never played with the Knicks, the 40-year-old spent time with the Raptors, Heat, Spurs, Suns, Hornets and Blazers in his 11-year NBA career.

Marks retired in 2011 and became the Spurs’ director of basketball operations the following year. He also has served as the GM of their D-League team, the Austin Toros.

The Nets, who at 14-40 have the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference, fired coach Lionel Hollins and GM Billy King on Jan. 10, in a move that was simultaneously dubbed as necessary to appease a dwindling fan base, hasty in its timing and typically chaotic of a dysfunctional organization.

At the time, owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement: “After careful consideration, I’ve concluded that it’s time for a fresh start and a new vision for the direction of the team. By making this decision now, it enables our organization to use the rest of the season to diligently evaluate candidates with proven track records. It’s clear from our current state of affairs that we need new leadership.”

Whoever the new GM is will face an immediate obstacle: Due to several win-now trades in recent years, Brooklyn does not control its first-round draft pick until 2019.

The Nets, who are 4-13 under interim coach Tony Brown, resume play Friday night at home against the Knicks.
