Danny Ferry, who leaves the Hawks last year after a racially-charged controversy, is said to be in the running for the vacant Nets general manager position.

As Mikhail Prokhorov tries to resurrect his franchise, the word from league sources in and around the Nets is that the owner wants to hire a GM before the coach. Prokhorov has said himself that he’d prefer his coach and GM as separate people.

That doesn’t preclude John Calipari, who could act as president of basketball operations and coach while having a GM as a colleague. However, league sources outside of the direct search told the Daily News that they expect the Nets to look at two other experienced candidates for GM — Danny Ferry and Bryan Colangelo.

“Everything being reported about a top candidate or whatever is not true, it can’t be true,” the source said.

Ferry comes with some baggage but has ties to the Nets. The 49-year-old was interviewed by Mikhail Prokhorov for the gig back in 2010 before the Russian hired Billy King. Ferry’s father, Bob, is also employed by the Nets as a scout.

Ferry, a Duke teammate of King in the 80s, built the current successful Hawks team before a forced resignation last year amidst a racially-charged controversy. Since the fallout, Ferry has been laying low while accumulating character references.

Even Commissioner Adam Silver – also a Duke man – said Ferry’s comments shouldn’t have cost him a job.

Ferry’s last gig as GM was a success, having built Atlanta into the power that won 60 games last season and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. Colangelo, 50, comes from a basketball family and father Jerry, the president of the Sixers and chairman of USA Basketball.

Bryan Colangelo last was GM of the Raptors, earning Executive of the Year in 2007 after winning the division title. He also was Executive of the Year in 2005 while GM of the Suns.

According to Prokhorov, assistant GM Frank Zanin is fielding phone calls approaching next month’s trade deadline. Chairman of the Board of Directors Dmitry Razumov, CEO Brett Yormark and Porokhorov’s trusted partner in sporting matters, Sergey Kushchenko, are in charge of the search. Sources confirmed that King is also being consulted about his replacement.

Prokhorov has indicated the search will be extensive and exhaustive.Sources also cautioned that the search is in its infancy and there hasn’t been a narrowing of candidates, despite a report that Colangelo already near the top of the list.

Calipari, according the Yahoo!, is asking for $120 million to leave his cushy job in Kentucky.
