MLB updates slide rule after Mets SS Tejada injured in NLDS

Call it the Chase Utley rule. Better late than never.

After multiple players suffered serious injuries last season — including Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada in the playoffs against Utley and the Dodgers in October — Major League Baseball has updated its rules on takeout slides at second base.

According to new rule 6.01 (j), “slides on potential double plays will require runners to make a bona fide attempt to reach and remain on the base.” The rule also states that “Runners may still initiate contact with the fielder as a consequence of an otherwise permissible slide. A runner will be specifically prohibited from changing his pathway to the base or utilizing a “roll block” for the purpose of initiating contact with the fielder.”

Also, potential violations of Rule 6.01(j) will be reviewable using instant replay, as will “neighborhood play” calls, which previously were exempted from replay review.

“Our goal in amending the slide rule was to enhance player safety, reduce incidents of injury and to do it in a way that respects and preserves the bona fide hustle plays that are integral to our game,” MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said in a statement. “I am optimistic that this new rule will accomplish those goals.”

TEJADA STILL HASN’T SPOKEN TO UTLEY SINCE TAKE-OUT SLIDE

Utley was issued a two-game suspension after fracturing Tejada’s right fibula on a takeout slide behind second base during Game 2 of the NL division series at Dodger Stadium. Utley’s appeal of the ban — which enabled him to remain active for the remainder of the NLDS — is still pending.

“Like I said from Day 1, it was a hard, aggressive slide, to try to break up a double play,” Utley told reporters at Dodgers camp earlier this week.

According to the new rule, a runner should be called for interference if he initiates or attempts to make contact with the fielder without making a “bona fide slide,” which is defined in four parts: beginning his slide (i.e. making contact with the ground) before reaching the base, attempting to reach the base with his hand or foot, attempting to remain on the base (except home plate) after the completion of the slide and sliding within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder.

THE WORST MOMENTS BETWEEN CHASE UTLEY AND THE METS

Additionally, a runner who engages in a “bona fide slide” shall not be called for interference, even in cases where the runner makes contact with the fielder as a consequence of a permissible slide. Interference also shall not be called where a runner’s contact with the fielder was caused by the fielder being positioned in (or moving into) the runner’s legal pathway to the base.

The new rule also addresses “roll blocks,” stating “a slide shall not be a “bona fide slide” if a runner engages in a “roll block,” or intentionally initiates (or attempts to initiate) contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking his leg above the fielder’s knee or throwing his arm or his upper body.” If the umpires determine that the runner violated this Rule 6.01(j), both the runner and batter-runner shall be declared out.

MLB also instituted another rule to its pace of game program to include timed 30-second visits to the pitcher’s mound by managers and pitching coaches and a reduction by 20 seconds of breaks between innings to 2:05 for locally televised games and 2:25 for nationally televised games.
