Mike Piazza: ‘I’m going to go in as a New York Met’

And to cap it all off, Mike Piazza is heading to Cooperstown as a Met.

Piazza, the newly-minted Hall of Famer, made it official Thursday when he was officially introduced as a member of the Cooperstown Class of 2016 in Manhattan.

“I’m going to go in as a New York Met,” Piazza said.

Piazza made it clear the Dodgers had a special place in his heart, but that in the end it was the connection with the New York fans that made his Mets days so special.

“I feel like the fans truly brought me into their family,” he added.

One of the greatest hitting catchers in major league history, Piazza will be enshrined in induction ceremonies on Sunday, July 24 along with Ken Griffey Jr.

Piazza, who holds the career record for most home runs by a catcher, was drafted by Tommy Lasorda and the Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 amateur draft. He spent his first seven big-leagues seasons in LA before moving east. After a couple days in Miami with the Marlins, Piazza was dealt to the Mets in 1998. He played eight seasons as the face of the Mets franchise.
